Summer is finally officially here. With this warm-weather season comes many fun outdoor activities. This makes sunburn a big concern. No matter how many times we have been told to use sunscreen it is easy to forget to use (and apply accordingly if you do). Here are a few easy ways to ease your pain and treat a sunburn:
Cool Down
Act fast to cool down your skin by taking a quick dip in a nearby water source or jumping in a cold bath. This will help make you feel much better but also assist the healing process. However, according to Huffington Post, “Also skip the soap, which will dry skin out even more. Instead, add a few scoops of baking soda to your bath. It’s cooling and helps your skin retain moisture.”
Hydrate
It’s important to hydrate your skin, however, don’t forget to hydrate yourself as well! According to skincancer.org, “Burns draw fluid to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body, so you may become dehydrated”. Drink plenty of water! Also, consider applying a gentle moisturizing lotion to help hydrate your skin and prevent peeling. This lotion with soothing aloe is highly rated!
Take Aspirin, not Ibuprofen
Most people know just how sensitive and sometimes unbearable a sunburn can be. Anti-inflammatory medication will help take away some of the pain that comes with a sunburn. It can also help reduce swelling. According to Health 911, “Aspirin kills the pain and reduces inflammation and redness of a sunburn. It short-circuits the whole sunburn process. It must be taken within 24 hours of getting sunburned. Aspirin is preferable to ibuprofen or acetaminophen because it is less stressful on the liver and kidneys.”
